Among the 35 panel sessions held during the two-day event, Skylight President Habutsu spoke on the panel titled “Global Untapped Potential and Investment in Women’s Football (By Skylight).”

The  points of  discussion:

  • Growth Opportunities in the Women’s Football Market
Women’s football is a good market experiencing rapid commercial value growth, driven by increasing broadcasting rights fees, sponsorship deals, and the maturing transfer market. It is anticipated to continue its exponential growth, with further development expected through strategic investment.
  • Potential and Challenges of the Japanese Market
While Japan possesses a world-class player development system, the commercial success of its domestic league (WE League) remains a challenge. Overcoming this requires partnerships with investors and the establishment of governance and infrastructure dedicated to women’s football. The AFC Women’s Champions League, starting in the 2024/25 season, is also expected to be a significant catalyst for growth.
  • Uniqueness and Competitiveness of Women’s Football
Women’s football establishes its unique value by offering a different fanbase and viewing experience compared to men’s football. Its strong affinity with family audiences and diverse communities like the LGBTQ+ community, as well as the safe and friendly atmosphere in stadiums, are key to attracting new customer segments.

Future Outlook

Through this session, the significant growth potential of the women’s football market and the importance of strategic investment to realize that potential were reaffirmed. Skylight is committed to continuing its support for the sustainable development of women’s football and strives to create both social and commercial value through the sports business.
